The One With Indiana Jones
So yeah, Indiana Jones. My god, it sucked. Even honey admitted it sucked and he was the reason we went to see it in the first place. To let him have the benefit of the doubt, he was rather skeptic about the whole thing to begin with, but he wanted to give it a try to kinda form his own opinion, so I said I'd go with him. I promised I'd whine about it later, but I said I'd go, so we reached a compromise
.
Harrison Ford seems to have lost whatever minor acting skills he possessed, but when he attempts to deliver semi-romantic lines it is particularly bad and the cheese is inappropriately dripping allover. Not that anyone else did a much better job. I think the only person that I actually enjoyed watching was Cate Blanchette, mostly because she's usually brilliant in whatever she does, but also because (with the exception of a few accent-related incidents) she was very convincing. And the kid. The kid was funny. Especially clichéd, but funny regardless.
But all that aside, the worst crime of that film was the butchering of the amazing idea that lay in the heart of it. It is something that I have longed believed in; something I still consider to be the key to solve the mystery of all ancient civilizations that still lie beyond our reach and also the very key I hope we will never find. The "thing" that was personified in the film as a crystal skull, otherwise regarded as secrets of the most forbidden knowledge is what all of the world's mythologies, I believe, are based on. If you do your reading of the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Mayans, the Irish (Celts) and other mythologies, you'll find remarkable similarities in the portrayal of their gods and especially their origin and their abilities; their gifts to mankind. It took us a good few thousand years to realize these gods were simply advanced species from another dimension (or planet, if you will), but clearly for some people it is not enough. And clearly too many don't bother to cross-reference basic myths and need films like Indiana Jones to teach them.
The point is though that in all cultures, in all ancient myths, "gods" came and went and people took, and took, and took. People became so greedy that the higher beings became cautious. They began to warn them that they were getting dangerously close to something that was not theirs to know, but humans wouldn’t listen. Their insatiable thirst for knowledge is an Original Sin not only in the mythology of the Bible. Isn't it odd that all of these magnificent civilizations the secrets of which we have yet to uncover thousands of years later all vanished from the face of the earth just as they reached their prime? What I "gods" finally became angry; finally said, that's enough; we won't give anymore; you mustn't know these things. One by one, they all fell into ruin. Oddly enough, only Atlantis, the most mysterious one, the one whose existence is still debatable, is openly known for having fallen due to that particular sin. Having housed the brightest of minds, having been the very center of intelligence and civilization is completely vanished, not leaving even a trace, only serving as warning to its various outposts, such as the Egyptians, but they were all too quick to forget about it. The story of Atlantis was first discovered in historic scrolls by the ancient Egyptians, and still, they were among the first to fall. People don't learn. Thousands years later and we still don't learn. Kinda sad once you think of it.
So yeah, the film sucked. The way it handled this delicate subject, that deserved so much more, was shaky at best and I wish there was more to it. But I think it also comes down to that this subject should have not been addressed in a film revolving around cheap action tricks, poor acting and cheesy one-liners. I hope that one day a film worthy of it will be made to discuss it.

The One With The Political Rant
Yes my blog's gone political now. Well, just this once because there are a few things that I really need to get off my chest.
First and foremost, our newly elected Taoiseach. Whatever Bertie did, regardless of whether he was guilty or not, he was a good leader, he was a well-deserving leader and icon of this country; he's had a political career he could be more than proud of and unfortunately too many idiots quickly forgot that he was the person who made Ireland into the country it is today. There is no denying that his government suffered a failure or two down the line, but as far as I'm concerned, the good they have accomplished by far outweighs the bad, and frankly, some of the bad, if not most of it, was rather out of their control or in spite their greatest effort to counter it. The point is; his flaws aside and regardless of his guilt or innocence in the scandal that led to his stepping down, he was a very good leader, not to mention the fact that by stepping down he did the honorable thing; something that only proved what a good leader he was; he did not put himself before his country (take a look at the Prime Minister of Israel, for example, who has by now been worldwide accused of fraud, sexual harassment and pretty much everything short of murder and he still persists to hold on to his office). Even in his departure, Bertie set the best possible example.
And now we have Brian Cowen; first class arsehole. First of all; this man is to represent our country? Look at him; he's a mess. He lacks any remotely potential traces of anything that makes a leader, he has no charm, no charisma, nothing, not even a trace of intelligence or humor on his features. If this is the face that is going to be associated with Ireland from now on, I foresee many people looking the other way in disgust and disappointment. He has only been Taoiseach for several days when his own party publicly admitted they just may have elected a dictator (they openly used worse names for him beside that one). His leadership has already been compared to Eamon de Valera's, and not at all in a good way. I think this country is going to suffer greatly from this mistake. His election is something that should have never happened. I know he hasn't technically been elected, only succeeded Bertie Ahern as the leader of Fianna Fail, but I can only hope that soon enough everyone is going to wake up and public election is going to be held that will correct this dreadful mistake before everything that Ireland stands for is flushed down the toilet by one man's incompetence. This is one of the most prosperous, most beautiful countries in the world. Personally, I don't want to see it destroyed in the hands of some wannabe-leader.
And now to rant #2: the bleedin' Eurovision contest. This fecking Turkey has been annoying me ever since I reluctantly became aware of its existence, and for the life of me, I still don't understand what the people that came up with it were on. But sending it to the Eurovision contest to represent Ireland was the final straw
. To be honest, I don't care about the Eurovision one bit, but I was actually praying he would lose. I can't believe they were stupid enough to allow this… piece of rap, excuse the bluntness, to represent this country. I hope they've learned their lesson and will be a bit smarter next year because this year's contest was, in my opinion, a shameful blemish on Ireland as a whole.
End of political blog. Our kitchen is being renovated downstairs and I think I'm gonna escape to the shopping centre before I develop a serious headache. I can't believe I just used the words 'escape' and 'shopping centre' in the same sentence… I might as well go, ring my parents. Also maybe drop by La Senza, check out lingerie and possibly buy "Andy" a present…
